Let Them Eat Cake

Wedding cakes have a unique and interesting history. According to Wikipedia, the wedding cake is a tradition that began back in the Roman Empire. At the time, it was a loaf of bread that the groom broke over the brides head as a symbol of his dominance in the marriage and over her. The color of the cake is typically white to symbolize purity. The joint task of the bride and groom cutting the cake is meant to symbolize their first joint task in married life. The gesture of feeding cake to one another is a symbol of the commitment the bride and groom are making.

One of the earliest forms of the wedding cake is the French Croquembouche. The legend of this cake says that a pastry chef, visiting medieval England, witnessed their tradition of piling sweet rolls between the bride and groom which they would attempt to kiss over without knocking them all down. The pastry chef then went back to France and piled sweet rolls up into a tower to make the first Croquembouche.

The wedding cake topper was especially popular in the US in the 1950s when it represented the concept of “togetherness.” Today, however, they are more varied and often reflect shared hobbies or unique design facets. Cakes & Culinary Creations crafts all sorts of special designs and toppers to reflect a bride and groom’s vision of the perfect cake.

Random fact: In the United Kingdom, the traditional wedding cake is made from a rich fruitcake, although many modern cakes now consist of either vanilla sponge, chocolate sponge or carrot cake. Among some more elaborate cakes the United Kingdom see are those prepared for the Royal Weddings. These cakes are actually decorated boxes with the fruit cake cut into portions on the inside, allowing them to be easily served to hundreds of guests.

Whether you have hundreds of guests or 50 close friends and family, Cakes & Culinary Creations is there for you!

The wonderful world of fondant makes just about anything possible. It is made from gelatin and food-grade glycerine, which makes the sugar pliable and achieves a dough-like consistency. Fondant can also be created by mixing powdered sugar and melted marshmallows. When fondant is rolled, it can be rolled out like a pie crust and used to cover the layers of a cake. This is what gives it such a smooth appearance and allows for all the small details to be molded and shaped to perfection. Call Cakes & Culinary Creations today to see what we can make for you!

Style File

When choosing your wedding cake, there are many options to consider. Style, colors, shapes, height, flavor, design—what to pick? In an effort not to be overwhelmed, take heart with Cakes & Culinary Creations’ step-by-step process to choose the perfect set of tiers for your nuptials.

First, select the overall look that’s right for your wedding. You’ll need to choose between formal (think traditional all-white cakes with minimal decorations), modern (unique colors and patterns, sharp lines and clean edges), romantic (nostalgia or heirloom-inspired, slightly whimsical) or casual (non-traditional picks like cupcake towers).

Next up is size and shape. Do you want round tiers, square tiers, three tiers or seven tiers? Don’t feel confined with the traditional regulations of wedding cakes. At Cakes & Culinary Creations, we are anything but standard. Modern cakes tend to incorporate sleek square tiers, and traditional and romantic cakes build better on rounds—but in the end it’s up to you! Look at pictures, view our many examples of past cakes and locate the size and shape you like best. It’s not uncommon for brides and grooms to have a smaller cake created for photographs and the cake cutting, and serve guests sheet cake in the same flavor. But crafting a seven-tiered work of art to serve from is a valid option as well.

Now that you’ve got your style, your size and shape down pat, it’s time to tackle the design. This involves colors, decorative items, the cake topper and flowers. If you have always envisioned a beautiful cake cascading in real clusters of roses, then go for it! Remember, again, that tradition need not apply if you have other ideas. Your cake doesn’t have to be white—it can be blue, yellow, red or multiple colors! Try alternating complimentary hues on each tier. When it comes to the top, finish off your cake in a sparkling crystal-accented monogram or use your parent’s wedding cake topper from their special day.

Last up is flavor. This is where it really gets fun! Cakes & Culinary Creations specializes in taste and we’ve got some of the most mouthwatering flavors in town. Read about what’s on offer and come in for a cake tasting to try for yourself. The hardest part will be deciding on which one you love most! From chocolate praline to Bavarian cream, we are the frosting to your cake.

Trends: Designing your Cake

There are a million and one ways to design a cake, and we can do just about all of them at Cake Affairs & Culinary Creations. here’s no reason you can’t have what you want! From lace to stamps, brides and grooms take culinary inspiration from what surrounds them.

Some unique ways to personalizing your wedding cake might be staring you right in the face. Does your wedding gown feature panels of intricate lace, or perhaps a cluster of gorgeous fabric flowers? You can transfer these beautiful details onto your cake, with replicated fabric patterns or shapes.

If you’re an avid scrap-booker, or maybe you just have a thing for rubber stamps, all is not lost. Incorporate your favorite stamp, shape or motif onto your cake in a cinch. Rubber stamps can be replicated into an edible dye that can be printed onto the fondant. Now your favorite designs can be happily seen on your wedding cake, even from afar.

Whether it’s two tiers or seven, flowers will always work. Plus, they’ll never go out of style. Choose from the same blooms found in your bouquet, or simply go with the same color palette. They can be perched around the edges of your second or third tier in large clusters or cascade from the top to the bottom in a chic, wraparound effect. Other trendy touch-ups include crystals brooches, white on white shapes or layers, colored icing and sugar appliqués. You take the cake!
